Lesson 07: Fear of Dearth Carl Tucker
  Question No: 1 What, according to Tucker, are the reasons people jog for? Do they jogfor the ´Fear of Dearthµ? Bring out the elements of humour in the essay.
Answer: According to Tucker, people jog for various reasons. They say jogging is conducive and relieves monotony. They jog to lower their blood pressure, to escape the telephone call or a cranky spouse or a filthy household.Some people jog to satisfy themselves they are living a fruitful life.They jog for the µFear of Dearth¶ in one way or the other as given above in theform of various reasons for jogging.The elements of humour in the essay are provided by the author when he usesthe word µdearth¶ in the meaning of µdeath¶. As death is an unavoidable factand people are trying to avoid it foolishly by jogging
Question No: 2 Is Tucker being serious in his analysis? How can you tell?
Answer: Tucker is not serious in his analysis because it is not a seriousform of exercise. Most of the people jog to deceive themselves. They try tosatisfy themselves for their wrongdoings of gluttony and laziness. Jogging has become an obsession in the modern world and is an unsuccessful struggle tosustain good health. The author analyses people¶s opinion mockingly.
Question No: 3 Dearth means an inadequate amount, especially of food, scarcity. Do youthink the title of this essay is effective? Why did the author choose thisparticular title?
Answer: I think the title of the essay is effective and conveys the realessence of the author¶s mind. The author has successfully used the idea of scarcity from title µFear of Dearth¶, in the sense of jogging. He explains thevarious reasons given by the people for jogging and humorously brings thereader to the conclusion that people don¶t jog to make themselves physically fit but just to avoid the physical or mental scarcity of something.The author chose this particular title for the amusement of the reader. He triesto make the reader understand that only jogging would not be enough to releasethe joggers from their physical or mental scarcity. There is a need to change theapproach towards jogging 2nd year

Question No: 1 How did Jerome K. Jerome come to suspect that he had a bad liver?
Answer: Jerome K. Jerome came to suspect that he had a bad liver becausehe had been reading a patent liver-pill circular in which were detailed thevarious symptoms by which a man could tell when his liver was out of order.He had all of them.
Question No: 2 The author says, ´I had walked into that reading-room a happy, healthyman.I crawled out a decrepit wreck.µ Why?
Answer: The author says that he had walked into that reading-room ahappy, healthy man and crawled out a decrepit wreck because he was reading a book of medicines and every disease he read, seemed to him that he had that.Some way, he continued reading. When he was coming out, he felt like acompletely diseased person as if a hospital in himself.
Question No: 3 Why did the author think he had all the diseases listed in the book?
Answer: The author thought he had all the diseases listed in the book except housemaid¶s knee, because he had been reading a book of pharmacology without having enough knowledge of medicines and diseases.This was the real reason, he began thinking he had all the diseases listed in the book.  
Question No: 4 Why did the author feel hurt when he discovered that he did not havethe household·s knee [diseases]?
Answer: The author felt hurt when he discovered that he did not have thehousemaid¶s knee. The reading of the book disappointed him. He wanted toserve the students of medical colleges by letting them examine his body for hehad all the diseases. When comes to know that he had not have housemaid¶sknee, he felt hurt.
Question No: 5 Why should the author be an acquisition to the medical class? Why did hethink that the medical students would have no need to ¶walk the hospital·?
Answer: The author should be an acquisition to the medical class becausehe thinks he had all the diseases mentioned in Pharmacology. He thought thatthe medical students would have no need to µwalk the hospital¶, because theywould have a man having all diseases. They would not have to walk from patient to patient. Instead of that, they would have a man who is a hospital i.e.the author himself.
Question No: 6 What is the significance of the doctor·s advice; ´Don·t stuff your headwith things you don·t understand?µ
Answer: The doctor comes to know the real problem of the author. He advices himnot to read books he doesn?t understand. It signifies that we should not study the materialabout which we have no or very little understanding because it will harm us instead of benefiting.
